Chief Bisi Akande has admitted his financial status when he contested the Osun state governorship election, describing himself as a “very poor person” despite his decades of political in Nigerian politics.
In an interview with Splash FM, the Asiwanu of Ila Orangun revealed how Tinubu financed his gubernatorial campaign entirely. “It was in obedience to his instruction that I contested for the governorship election, and he bankrolled the expenses to make me the governor. I didn’t spend any money.
Chief Akande revealed that he was so poor that during his governorship campaign, he had no personal funds to finance his political ambitions. "Even during the governorship campaign, I didn't have personal money to fund it".
When asked if he was no longer poor, The former APC chairman emphasized that his lack of wealth has remained consistent throughout his political career. He said "I'm not rich"
His admission negates the common perceptions about Nigerian politicians and wealth accumulation during public service. Akande’s claim of poverty despite holding high political offices, including Secretary to the state government, Deputy Governor, Governor and National Party Chairman, suggests either exceptional personal integrity or a different definition of wealth.
